Lawn aerator is a garden tool that reduces soil compaction without killing the grass.  Unlike garden tillers, lawn aerators do not till the soil.  Lawn aerators relieve soil compaction by making holes in the ground.  There are two types of lawn aerators; core lawn aerator and spike lawn aerator.  Core aerators are far more effective than spike aerators.  Both are available in manual, gas-powered, and pull-behind tractor versions.  If you own a garden tiller, you may be able to purchase a  lawn aerator attachment that converts the tiller into a core aerator.

The holes created by lawn aerators will allow oxygen, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots.  The holes will also reduce water run-off so less irrigation will be needed.  Lawn aeration may be performed whenever the grass is actively growing. To achieve deep aeration, you should aerate a day after rain or irrigation. Remember to mark the sprinkler heads because lawn aerators, especially the commercial ones, will damage the sprinkler heads.
